Nick Knight at LCF - Inside the industry
Notes:
- In conversation with Fashion commentator, Colin McDowell and LCF head of college, Professor Frances Corner OBE
- When did you want to become a photographer? When I was in school, in the 1970's I borrowed my fathers camera, but I was studying science at the time - to become a doctor, but I used photography to be social
- Used photography to follow dreams/desires
- Would just walk up yo someone and ask to take their picture - social events
- iPhones and cameras we use now don't have the same effects that they used to, so he doesn't consider himself a photographer but a generalist
- Doesn't know why universities teach photography anymore
- never use a negative anymore
- times have changed and nowadays there are easier and more ways to create an image
- Lives photography with meaning an typography
- skinheads - book, made once he went to art college aged 18/19 and met Penney-a skinhead beauty he fancied
- he had a good childhood, loving parents who were well educated
- approached people in the street and photographed
- he was around during the end go the hippies and skinheads
- people use fashion as a right of passage-right to be here-showing your own identity-expressing who we are as individuals
- he wears a 60's style suit always wears the suit without a tie, black/grey
- he likes the fact he looks 'straighter' than he is perceived to be, people expect an eccentric person but he diminishes their expectations
- following a mod style
- wears 505 jeans in the studio
- he sees that digital is taking over and thinks it a positive-being free to do more like having new/more toys to play with (new apps, iPhone camera, editing o personal devices, anyone can own a camera)
- old system is corrupt (people won't talk about fashion on the runway critically due to the name of the brand, won't say certain things due to the brand name) o he believes it is good a new system is being put in place
- He doesn't prefer black and white but understands how and when to use it, if an image needs mood and drama, black and white could be used
- worked with demanding people had very demanding relationships-Alexander McQueen
- he seeks out people who's work he loves so he can put his heart and soul into it
